В книгах по истории ирокезов [Iroquois] упоминается обычай выкапывать дерево, складывать в яму оружие и вновь сажать в нее дерево. В некоторых случаях индейцы объявляли войну, втыкая томагавк [tomahawk] в столб в центре поселения белых. Точное происхождение выражения неизвестно; его первое использование в литературе принадлежит Вашингтону Ирвингу [Irving, Washington]
